CCP, Other Coatings Suppliers Address Industry Issues, Innovations

Dennis Ryer, CCP's product manager for liquid and powder resins, participated with a dozen other resin suppliers in a Market Update “Resins Roundtable” for JCT Coatings Tech, an FSCT coatings industry publication.

Issues and strategies addressed include:

  • Market and general economic growth
  • Corporate consolidations
  • Raw materials volatility
  • Technical challenges
  • Environmental regulations

Published in the July 2007 issue of magazine (page 36), the article is now also available online to JCT Coatings Tech subscribers (www.coatingstech.org).

In her approach to the topic, writer Cynthia Challener stated that despite a “slow down in the U.S. housing market, continued regulatory pressures around the globe, and tight availability for some raw materials,” the previous year (2006) was, in general, a “good year for the U.S. paint and coatings industry.”

However, Challener indicated that the strong growth seen in 2006 is not expected to be sustained in 2007, due to a number of factors, including “weakened economic conditions,” and “continued movement of wood, furniture, and metal manufacturing operations offshore.”

In Ms. Challener's article, Mr. Ryer commented that in addition to the movement of industrial applications overseas, “consolidation has also resulted in few medium-sized, technically competent customers to help drive technology and differentiation.”

When asked about main drivers for short- and long-term industry growth, Mr. Ryer observed that VOC regulations “can be both viewed both as a threat and as an opportunity,” with companies willing to dedicate resources and “commit to meeting the VOC challenges ahead” able to achieve success and growth in the years ahead.

Mr. Ryer further remarked that the key to managing these drivers is for coatings suppliers to continue a “strong technical effort in a number of low-VOC technologies.”

In her closing overview of companies represented in the Roundtable, Ms. Challener wrote that most “capital improvement projects at Cook Composites and Polymers (CCP) over the last several years have been in the area of expanding capacity in alkyd dispersion production.” She noted that CCP has developed “a product portfolio that includes several unique technologies and patented compositions.”

In particular, she highlighted the introduction in the past two years of:

  • CHEMPOL® 821-2241. . .“an essentially ‘0’ VOC and surfactant-free medium oil alkyd dispersion designed for porch and deck, and sash and trim applications and wood stains”
  • CHEMPOL® 821-1391. . .” a low-VOC surfactant-free short oil alkyd dispersion designed for high gloss topcoats (with) fast dry, good film integrity, and toughness”
  • CHEMPOL® 821-2220 . . .”a surfactant-free, patented, internally cross-linked acrylic alkyd dispersion designed for porch and deck applications that features early water resistance.”
